Book Review - Zombie Makeout Club Vol 1: Death Wish by Peter Richardson

Zombie Makeout Club Vol 1: DeathWish (Zombie Makeout Club, 1)

Zombie Makeout Club Vol 1: DeathWish by Peter Richardson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis: A rebellious high school student is brought back to life in a strange underground facility after committing suicide. Now, she must piece together not only how and why she has been resurrected, but also confront the fragmented memories of her past and the horrors of the laboratory that want to send her back to the afterlife. This breakneck story illustrates a violent vision of life after death.

My Thoughts: I liked this but actually haven't got a clue how to explain it. I know that doesn't make much sense but it's the best I can do. I mean I feel like I had an idea of what was going on most of the time but then the story would get a bit off kilter like we were supposedly experiencing flashbacks of the girls life before her suicide but the transitioning confused me.

It's gory and is about suicide and rebirth (zombies per say). I love zombies and have just gotten into graphic novels/manga and am totally enjoying it so this was the best of both worlds for me! Even though I am a bit confused I would love to continue on with this and see what happens.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing this copy for my honest opinion.

Book Review - Dead Meat Day 4 by Nick Clausen

Dead Meat: Day 4 (Dead Meat, #4)Dead Meat: Day 4 by Nick Clausen

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Day 4 of the zombie apocalypse

The story picks up from Day 3. We meet Dorte, a young doctor, who desperately tries to find a cure for her sister, who got scratches by one of the infected. It’s a race against time, and it’s only the beginning of another day in hell.
By Day 4, the infection begins to spread across nation borders, and it looks like none of the governments will be able to contain it. Is it too late to save the world?

My Thoughts: I know I say "this part" has been my favorite part about every day of this storyline but Holy Smokes they just keep getting better as the tension keeps building and the world keeps being taken over by the zombies!

There were so many jaw dropping head popping moments here I wanted to reach in and smack a few people! So many people could have been spared in this episode had they only used a bit more common sense and helped each other instead of every man for himself. I was so saddened by a few of the victims but not everybody can have a happy ending. That doctor and soldier towards the beginning should have know better!

I have said all along during this actual pandemic we have being facing in real life that I felt as though I had fallen asleep while reading a horror novel and somehow got sucked into the story and can't seem to wake up and a few parts here kinda felt familiar especially folks buying up all the toilet paper. In the story I'm like what they gonna do with all that toilet paper? Mummify the zombies? Well I'm just here to tell ya tha last thing that will be going thru my mind if a zombie gets after me is wiping my behind!

Book Review - Dead Meat Day 3 by Nick Clausen

Dead Meat: Day 3

The end of the world one day at a time
Events pick up from where they left off on Day 2. We meet William who works at the hospital. His workday starts out like any other—until he finds two zombies locked in a utility room in the basement. From there, things quickly escalate.

On Day 3, the infection is picking up speed, the zombies are spreading rapidly, and very soon everything could spiral out of control. Is it too late to save the world?

Day 3 will be out on December 8!

Catch up on Days 1 & 2 Here

My Thoughts: I'm still hanging on to this thrilling series as now even more zombies are coming into play. Things are starting to get real now real fast! I love how the author has thrown together the lives of the characters making them blend together as the world begins  to come under attack before our eyes. I can't really pinpoint any one character I am following or rooting for at this point....seems when I get set on one they get bit and we all know what that means! LOL

Keep the zombies coming Mr Clausen!

Review - The Harvesting by Melanie Karsak

Synopsis: It's all fun and games until someone ends up undead.

The residents of Hamletville will need Layla's help if they are to survive the zombie apocalypse that's upon them. But that is not the only problem. With mankind silenced, it soon becomes apparent that we were never alone. As the beings living on the fringe seek to reclaim power, Layla must find a way to protect the ones she loves or all humanity may be lost.

Amazon / Smashwords

Review: Okay firstly I am a HUGE fan of the zombie genre so it was a must for me to pick this one up anyhow but boy did I get a whooping surprise when not only did I find the townfolks battling zombies but we also have vamps and spirits running amok among them as well? Oh holy hell the action this story unravels is to much for me to even attempt to discuss here but I was very into and hooked on the story by the first couple of pages.

I was really thrilled that this was not your average zombie story with folks running about doing dumb stuff. It was like even though obviously zombie outbreaks aren't an everyday attraction these folks kinda already knew common sense stuff like shoot them in the head, don't touch them for Gods sake, and be ready to cut your losses."Sorry cousin Lulu but you been infected gotta shoot you it's nothing personal!" I know that may sound harsh but face it that is not your friend or family member any longer.

If ever a zombie outbreak occurs I hope I have Layla or somebody like her on my side because she one tough cookie. She gets the job done no matter what the consequenses and I loved her for that. I enjoyed the interactions between her, Ian, and Jamie. Ian was the big arse in this story though and I am so thrilled Layla saw thru his crap but I am not going there or I may tend to ramble....

No matter what your pleasure I am sure some aspect of this story will grip you!

Let Me Frighten You Rhiannon Frater

I am inspired and intrigued by what frightens me. Writing about what I fear compels me to step outside my comfort zone and forces me to confront issues and themes that are not always easy to discuss. Creating an imaginary world where terrible things happen to fictional characters is an easier (and safer) way to deal with issues we must all face at some time in our lives such as loss of loved ones, overcoming adversity, and evolving in the face of hardship. But it also allows me as a writer to also delve into much more frightening and rare occurrences such as war, natural disasters, and apocalyptic scenarios.

When I sat down to write the AS THE WORLD DIES zombie trilogy, I wanted to address the zombie apocalypse in a realistic manner. Though the scenario of the dead wandering the earth and eating the living is highly unrealistic, I wanted the characters of the story to be everyday people who somehow manage to live past the first terrifying days of the plague. I didn’t want any Rambos or Ripleys in the mix. I wanted people who would resemble me and the reader.

Within each character in AS THE WORLD DIES there is familiarity. The characters are people we know or maybe even aspect of ourselves. They all have different strengths and weaknesses, personality flaws, and issues to overcome. Because I wanted my characters to be everyday folks, their reactions to their terrible circumstances are grounded in reality.

For example, Jenni is a battered housewife/trophy wife at the beginning of the first book in the trilogy, THE FIRST DAYS. After the devastating death of her children, Jenni is rescued by Katie. At first she is in shock, but slowly evolves throughout the series into a much stronger (yet not always stable) person. To make Jenni realistic, I drew on
the coping mechanisms victims in abusive situations develop. The mind is amazing in its capacity to adapt to dire circumstances in order to ensure survival. Jenni’s ability to basically cut off her emotions and compartmentalize allows her to survive better than people who have yet to develop these coping skills. Also, Jenni is extremely used
to living in a life-threatening situation on a daily basis, so the zombocalypse is not much different in some respects. Though sometimes readers get mad at Jenni for her immaturity (she was married at 17 and isolated from the world by her husband) and her bizarre actions, she remains one of the most popular, if not the most popular, character in the series.

Oftentimes readers of the series tell me how the characters in the book feel like friends. They worry about them, fear for them, and sometimes mourn them. I have also been told how readers feel so attached to the world and the characters they feel like they are in the action. I contribute this to the fact that they characters feel like people we know
in our everyday lives, it is easy to slip into the dangerous world of AS THE WORLD DIES with them.

Though I love superheroes and magical/supernatural characters, in the end they are far removed from me with their abilities. I know I can’t do the things they can do. But I can easily imagine myself on a rescue run with Jenni and Katie, clutching a gun, sweating with anxiety, and feeling sick to my stomach with fear. Somehow this translates to the
reader as well. I’ve heard so many stories of people having to put the book aside so their wildly beating heart could calm down. Honestly, I’ve stopped typing for the same reason.

There is a certain magic that sometimes happens in books that is hard for the author to explain to the reader, but after a lot of thought I do believe the reason why my books can be so terrifying is because the characters are not so far removed from you and me.

So when a zombie is moving relentlessly toward a character in SIEGE, the fast beating of your heart and the tremor of fear flitting through your mind is probably because you could be character facing uncertain outcome.

Now the question is…do you survive?

Review - Dead Hunger: The Flex Sheridan Chronicle by Eric A. Shelman

Synopsis:
An epidemic that's turning humans into zombie-like creatures has swept over the eastern United States and quite possibly the world, and Flex Sheridan doesn't like it one bit. In an effort to save his younger sister, Flex re-connects with perhaps the strongest woman he knows - Gem Cardoza, his former girlfriend. Together they take his six-year-old niece Trina, the only uninfected survivor of his sister's famiy, and his infected sister Jamie, and make a run from central Florida back to his isolated home in Lula, Georgia.

Review:
I liked it alot but it really was just your average zombie apocolypse story. Nothing really new was brought to the table except for these zombies are thought to have some sort of awareness like they actually can think because of the way some of them acted but I can't really explain it further without spilling to much... I feel like the second book will be more entertaining as this first one mostly just sets the stage and puts the players on the field so to speak. I really liked the fact that the women in this story were just as tough as the men and NOT standing on the sidelines squeeling Save Me! Save Me!

Sherry has lived with her family in a bunker for more than three years. Her grandfather's body has been in the freezer for the last six months, her parents are at each other's throats and two minutes ago, they ran out of food. Sherry and her father must leave the safety of the bunker. What they find is an empty Los Angeles, destroyed by bombs and haunted by Weepers - savage humans infected with a rabies virus.
I am a zombie freak so this book grabbed me from the get go and I hated to put it down until I finished it! I was totally impressed with Sherry and how she stepped up to the plate when times got hard in the bunker and her mom just couldn't "take it". Sherry pretty much in my thoughts was the strongest member in her entire family. Even her father in some aspects.

Once it was decided to venture out of the bunker when they ran out of food it was Sherry who needed to go with her father to find food and see what was going on in the world above. It didn't take long for them to run into trouble and get separated. Luckily she was rescued by and later allied up with Joshua who taught her how to fight and protect herself and her family against The Weepers.

I can't imagine being holed up in a bunker for three hours with my family much less three years! Oh my gosh, we'd be done killed one another so no worries on the zombies! Can't imagine having to feed a family of six or seven on a single can of soup either. This story will really drive the nail home on the what ifs. I am here to tell you I am not ready or prepared for any Zombie Rising or Apocalypse.

Seemingly overnight the world transforms into a barren wasteland ravaged by plague and overrun by hordes of flesh-eating zombies. A small band of desperate men and women stand their ground in a fortified compound in what had been Queens, New York. They've named their sanctuary Eden.

Harris--the unusual honest man in this dead world--races against time to solve a murder while maintaining his own humanity. Because the danger posed by the dead and diseased mass clawing at Eden's walls pales in comparison to the deceit and treachery Harris faces within.

I tried really hard to like this book because I am very pro zombie but it was just hard for me to get into. This is one that would have made a far better movie than book because of all the jumping around it did. It just did not read well for me because it starts out with zombies attacking then it jumps to the past then to a set of totally different folks then back to the zombie situation then another visit to the past and so on and so forth.

It's sad because it has the potential for a remarkable story had it been put together more chronologically. It was just to hard to keep up with what was going on as it is. I may have even been able to deal with it had the author marked the chapters like I have seen in some books like where they say "present day" or "2 months ago" ect... I should have been able to read this book in about an hour or so but instead it took me about a week because I kept wanting to throw it against a wall and not because it was that bad a book but because I wanted to like it so bad and couldn't I kept getting frustrated and puttin it down and reading books in between it and kept trying to get into the flow of it but alas it was to no avail.

Review - The Christian Zombie Killers Handbook: Slaying the Living Dead Within by Jeff Kinley

Ben Forman was just an ordinary guy, a young professional starting his first job and falling in love with his girlfriend. Living in the outskirts of a southern city, he didn't think the zombie activity so common in the major cities would hit so close to home. But it was becoming clear that the mysterious infection reanimating the deceased was a growing epidemic across the country. The question was, would he stay alive or become the undead?
This was a wonderful double whammy of a zombie adventure tale. It's kind of like getting two stories in one...You have Ben's zombie story and then you have the theoretical story of how there is a little bit of zombie (sin) in all of us and how we can overcome our wicked side and live in harmony with God. It took me a while to get used to the way the the book was divided up. It would give us episodes of the ongoing zombie adventure with Ben and his family and then would lead into a chapter of the theoretical/nonfiction story. There were things I admit I didn't want to read in this book on the spiritual side because they "hit to close to home" but after doing so I had a greater awareness of my relationship with God and how I want to live my life.

There is a notes section as well as a discussion guide for each chapter of the book which I found very helpful in helping me follow along especially the notes section with the Bible verses that corresponded to the passages in the story.
