Book Tour/Giveaway - Blackhorse Road by Merida Johns

Blackhorse Road by Merida Johns

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Women’s fiction romance
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB: Under another hand, Blackhorse Road could all too easily have been a singular romance. Johns provides more as she follows Luci down the rabbit hole and out the other side of life experience, bringing readers into a world where . . . transgression changes everything and challenges carefully-constructed foundations of belief and values. As Luci lets go of her lifesavers and navigates obstacles to happiness, her story becomes a vivid portrait of hope and self-examination which ultimately moves into unexpected territory. Novel readers seeking a tale that closely considers deception and forgiveness, love gained and lost, and family ties will welcome the multifaceted Blackhorse Road's ability to come full circle in a satisfyingly unexpected way. - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review It’s the turbulent mid-1960s, and Luci, an eighteen-year-old Southern California girl, is on the quest for self-determination and new beginnings. Three powerful forces influence her values: the grit of her Irish great-grandmother, Lucinda McCormick; the philosophy of choice of her father, Sam; and the 1960s ideals of equity and altruism. But potent foes thwart Luci at every turn. Her budding romance with a handsome United States Air Force Academy cadet sets the stage for conflict and deception that last for two decades. When Luci discovers how her autonomy and her love affair were hijacked, she struggles with anger and bitterness. But from a surprising source, she finds a forgiveness path that restores her well-being and hope and, in the end, faith in herself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt: The cranky engine revved as the driver shifted gears, and the military bus crawled forward exiting the air force base. Along a narrow and dark roadway, the vehicle increased its speed and left the MPs at the gate standing immobile and mute in the glow of the rising moon. Drifting through the open windows, the Southern California desert air blew like pixie dust across the faces of the thirty young women headed home from the street dance. A few hours ago, they were preening and adjusting their bouffant hairdos, reapplying creamy pink lipstick, and placing the last twirls of mascara on their eyelashes to prepare for a street dance with cadets from the elite Air Force Academy. Then, the atmosphere buzzed with gossip, chatter, laughter, and anticipation. Now, the glimmering night sky created the perfect backdrop that lulled each into a contented silence to fantasize about the handsome men they had met. “This is the beginning of my story about love and betrayal and a journey toward empathy, compassion, and forgiveness. It is also a story of choice—my choice to be inspired by the resilience of a great-grandmother, the values of a father, and the wisdom of a spouse. But in the end, it is a story of how a letter of gratitude . . . reminded me to open my heart to love and kindness.”

From The Author:

What’s the Scoop on Blackhorse Road?

When I tell someone that I have written a novel, I am asked the predictable question, "What’s up with the story? Is this an account of real events. Maybe your life?"

"Well, no, but then again, yes," I stammer.

When I started writing fiction, I took two pieces of advice before pounding the keyboard—write about what you know and know what you write.  Blackhorse Road blossoms from my imagination that is influenced by my experience, perspectives, and observations that give the story authenticity and sensitivity, helping readers connect with the characters and feel their joy, disappointment, sorrow, and happiness.

But Blackhorse Road is enriched by the backstories that set the context for the characters and events in the story—historical incidents, politics, economics, philosophy, religion, and psychology that influence the values of the characters and ultimately the consequences of their actions.  I uncover these backstories from usual fact-checking and readily available historical references.  But the sources I like best to enhance the pallet of my novel are diaries and old letters.  This is how I stumbled upon “Arthur.”

Chapter 17, titled “Arthur,” sets the stage where sitting together on a front porch in 1966 on a warm Canadian summer afternoon, octogenarian Geneviève and her eighteen-year-old granddaughter share the excitement and intimacies of their first loves.

. . . “Reviving the intensity of her romances, Geneviève felt a closeness to her granddaughter, believing that Luci, too, would understand the passion she experienced as a young woman. She scooted her rocking chair closer to Luci, longing to confide stories of her youthful affaires de coeur, as she delicately called them.

“Oh, my dear, I’m reliving my old romances vicariously through you,” Geneviève said in a breathy voice . . . Grinning, Geneviève crept her hand into the pocket of her shirtwaist dress and pulled out what looked like letters, tied neatly together with a gold ribbon. Luci’s heart flipped, looking at the packet.

“See here, Luci,” Geneviève whispered, patting the bundle as lovingly as she would a kitten. “These are some of the letters from my dear Arthur.” She paused, meeting Luci’s eyes. “What do you think? Do you want to read them with me?”

Taken off guard, Luci’s hand flew up to cover her mouth as her grandmother untied the ribbon as if it were pure gold. Clasping the notes between her hands, Geneviève caressed the cherished mementos with her thumbs as though rubbing them would resurrect Arthur’s spirit. Carefully, she opened one of the fragile, yellowed envelopes and removed several pages of stationery. Even from where she was sitting, Luci saw the beautiful script of Arthur’s hand. The lines of written words were straight and neat with capital letters highlighted in crafted swirls. Luci edged to the front of her chair for a closer look at the letter in her grandmother’s shaking hand . . .

My Dearest Geneviève . . .

So, “What’s the scoop with Blackhorse Road?”

Blackhorse Road is a work of fiction that is inspired and enriched by true narratives and experiences and tells a story of the human experience. It draws upon letters, diaries, and other first-hand accounts to show how ordinary people tackle challenges, live through sorrow and betrayal, and struggle with doubt. And for some characters, it is a chronicle of how acting on their aspirations transported them to unexpected places within themselves.

Enjoy the narrative, and let the backstories raise your curiosity and transport you to unexpected places within yourself.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

 Short Bio: Merida Johns takes her experience as an educator, consultant, and businesswoman and writes about the human experience. In 2018 Merida took an unlikely off-ramp from writing textbooks and motivational books to authoring women’s fiction. Her stories are learning lessons where awareness and curiosity transport readers to the most unexpected places within themselves. Merida hails from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, grew up in Southern California and has lived from coast-to-coast in the United States. Besides writing, she enjoys fabric arts, including weaving and knitting. She makes her home in the serene Midwest countryside that gives her the inspiration and space for storytelling.

Long Bio: For three decades, I was a university professor who taught classes and wrote textbooks on “nerdy” subjects centering on computer systems in healthcare. But a decade ago, informed by my experience in a male-dominated area, I started my practice as a leadership coach to help women break the glass ceiling and fulfill their leadership and economic potential. Consequently, during the past ten years, I transitioned from writing textbooks to motivational books on creating environments where people flourish through better leadership.

About a year ago, I was on a conference call discussing concepts of what makes a fulfilling life with fellow life coaches. Bang! Like a thunderclap, I had an insight. What would it be like to help people understand the concepts of a flourishing life in a story instead of through a motivational book or text? After all, I thought, storytelling has been the most compelling form of communication for thousands of years. As far as I could recall, none of the great prophets fed up learning objectives and multiple-choice questions to their followers. No! They got their message across through stories. Motivational books and textbooks give frameworks, theories, and ideas, but they don’t immerse us in the human experience. They don’t show us how others face challenges, embrace their passions, overcome sorrow, celebrate achievement, quash self-doubts, develop positive emotions and relationships, handle betrayal, or act on aspirations. Storytelling ignites our imagination and emotion. We experience being part of the story rather than being served up a platter of facts, exercises, and information. This eye-opener was enough for me to take on the challenge of novel writing. My passion is to help people catapult beyond concepts and theories and jump into the wonderment of imagination in designing a flourishing life for themselves. Storytelling does this best. Happily, as a fiction writer, I have jettisoned learning objectives and test questions. Ah…the freedom makes me feel as light as a balloon on a summer breeze.

Guest Post/Giveaway - Wings of Shadow by Anna Kyss

In the struggle for survival...

Meghan's graduation gift is one that any eighteen-year-old would dream of: traveling abroad to England. Her journey turns into more adventure than expected when Meghan meets the mysterious Kiernan and is introduced to a strange society hidden beneath the streets of London.

The fittest win out at the expense of their rivals...

When Meghan's life is threatened, she flees the city and seeks sanctuary in a distant village--a place unseen by human eyes for over one hundred years. Not knowing if anyone can be trusted, Meghan tries to determine who is friend, who is foe... and who has captured her heart. Meanwhile, a battle for survival brews all around her.

What are your thoughts on tradition? by Anna Kyss

Two months new to the published world, I am still rather shy about blogging. I asked my favorite villain, Lord Killian, if he would feel comfortable tackling this post. The question presented to him was:
What are your thoughts on tradition?

Tradition… perdition! Did those blasted village Fae send this question my way? The problem with tradition is that people become so focused on recreating old rituals and practices, they never look to the new. I pity those who remain within Solas, for they are on the road to extinction. In the last hundred years, only one set of twins has been born. Not a single birthing has occurred in the last twenty years. All the while, the Fae grow more and more ill, poisoned by the inescapable pollution of our modern world. The sad truth is—we are a dying species.

You call me a villain, but I view myself as a visionary. I was brave enough to break through the binds of tradition, for our archaic ceremonies did nothing but hold us back. Does a true leader watch their people—their entire species—perish? Absolutely not! It is time to break the habits of old. Why sit and pray to Anya when she has done nothing to help us?

The very first time I met Charles, I knew he was a fellow man of science, interested in moving the world forward, rather than holding people back with beliefs that accomplished nothing. Do you know he was also ridiculed for his work? The good people of England ostracized Mr. Darwin, not wanting to be tarnished by association.

Similarly, the “Fae of Light,” as they call themselves, separate themselves from me. But mark my word, the day will come when they thank me for having had the foresight to save our people. Yes, some humans must die in the process, but will they really be missed? After all, humans breed like the rabbits I remember from the English countryside. There are millions of them, perhaps even billions by now. I lose track with each new decade.
Please raise a cup and join me in a toast. Trust me, it is a delicious vintage:
In the struggle for survival,
The fittest win out at the expense of their rivals,
Because they succeed in adapting themselves to their environment.

Author’s note: While Lord Killian freely flings these ideas around, I would like to give acknowledgement and thanks to Charles Darwin for his… um… toast, and inspiring theories.

********Excerpt********

They sit at long tables under grape arbors. Heavy bunches of grapes hang from the vines. An eight-piece dance band in white tuxes and black bow ties plays tunes from every decade. Heavy silver dessert forks and coffee spoons rest untouched on the linen tablecloth. She can’t eat another bite. All the glasses, at least, she has used: white wine, red wine, water.
A light breeze comes up. It feels heavenly on her face. With nightfall, the heat has gone out of the air. The heat must be trapped in these old stone walls — the walls of the farmhouse, the walls surrounding the vineyard. The aroma of fresh herbs floats from a nearby garden, rosemary, and mint, she thinks as she watches people dancing. The bride, her beautiful white dress with the daring silk bodice; the groom’s parents, a man with close-cropped gray hair and a red rose in his lapel, and his wife in a shimmering blue dress that looks specially made by an Italian designer.
She keeps one eye on the young man in the navy suit with the green silk tie. He looks like something Michelangelo might have sculpted, then breathed life into. This young man knows everyone here, and has danced every dance for the last hour. But he’s dancing with both older and younger women, probably cousins, friends, the mothers of cousins and friends. She has no idea who he is.
She feels outclassed in her red silk dress from Bloomingdale’s. She had worn the same dress at a wedding in June in Chicago. No one here has ever seen it. If there are any more weddings this fall, she will just have to go shopping in Siena or even Florence, that’s all there is to it.
“May I have this dance?”
Like a vision, Michelangelo man stands beside her. Has somebody cast a magic spell here? How did he sneak up on her like that? She didn’t even notice the song had ended. Or that another one had started.
“I’m not much of a dancer.”
“We’ll see.” He tugs her hand.
“Really, you don’t have to.” He obviously feels a duty to make sure every woman in the place gets at least one dance.
“Of course I don’t have to. I’ve danced with all the women I was obligated to dance with. Now I want to dance with you.”
She doesn’t need more arm-twisting than this. He leads her to the dance floor. The band is playing a quiet song from the 1940s, she thinks, something familiar. Grape arbors surround the dance floor and fill the air with sweet perfume. He turns and puts one hand around her waist. “My name is Giancarlo,” he says, switching to Italian.
“Candace,” she says. “I’ve been here for three weeks. I can’t believe I’m at this beautiful wedding.”
“Your Italian is marvelous.”
Your lips are marvelous, she thinks. Your curly hair, the color of black coffee, and your handsome chiseled face are marvelous too. But you can’t say such things to a man you’ve never met before. Not in Tuscany. At least not before the end of the first dance. He glides around the floor, leading her with slight shifts in his weight, slight pressure with his hands. Her feet know where to go, just as her mouth knows how to form the words.
“We don’t have weddings like this in Chicago. The food … the music … the grapes.”
“My uncle’s house is nice,” Giancarlo agrees. “But I am sorry for Lucia. She has married a playboy. I do not think they will be happy.”
“They certainly look happy.”
Giancarlo makes a face. “I should not talk about the details. I know him. I’ve known him all my life, and he will never change. I tried to talk to my cousin, but she is in love and blind. What can we do?”
Giancarlo’s smile, Candace realizes, has a hypnotizing effect. Thank God a fast dance is starting, the Bee Gees. He makes no attempt to bring her back to the table, merely releases his hold on her waist.
“You are a beautiful dancer,” he says when the Bee Gees song ends. The band takes a break. Everyone is leaving the dance floor. Her heart sinks. Somehow she has managed to cling to him for two dances, something no woman before her had managed. Now he will bring her back to her table, his duty done. He will go back to his people.
“Thank you for the lovely dances.”
“Come, let’s get some fresh air. I’ll show you around,” Giancarlo says. And the really amazing thing is he doesn’t let go of her hand.

Two separate worlds . . .
One passion that binds them

Wild and passionate by nature, Lyra Black is not just any werewolf. She's the future leader of the powerful pack of the Thorn-if she can stay alive long enough to inherit the title.

One of the Cait Sith bloodline of vampire cat-shifters, Jaden Harrison has no interest in the wars plaguing the world of night. But when he rescues Lyra from a violent attack, they're both captured by an insatiable desire that threatens to overwhelm them and bind them together for eternity . . . just as ancient enemies prepare to strike. And when they do, the Thorn and the Cait Sith-and Lyra and Jaden's love-may never recover from the deadly blow . . .

OKay so I missed book one and missed the actual "meeting" between Lyra and Jaden our two star crossed lovers in Midnight Reckoning where apparently they didn't get off on a good foot and in fact really pissed each other off good fashioned! So as the story opens Jaden is out for a nightly stroll and comes across a heated argument between a man and woman. The man is making advances on the woman who turns out to be Lyra and she is not welcoming them so to make a long story short Jaden steps in and comes to her rescue. During the struggle Lyra loses a precious family heirloom and in her haste to get away she forgets it and Jaden makes his way to her home and this is where things get going!

I didn't like Lyra to begin with. I felt she was a spoiled rotten brat who was totally full of herself but I warm up to her as I learn more about her world and being an only child,,,a female child at that always having to prove herself to earn the respect she deserved because her father was Alpha of the Thorn. Jaden I immediately fell in love with I mean come on part vamp part puddy cat? purrrrrrrrrr lol I mean I loved that weird combination (weird because it was a first time for me) I just wonder about the cat part. I think I missed something like how that was sposed to come into play or the purpose of him being part cat.

I enjoyed learning about The Proving and and the ways of The Thorn and their laws although I found most of them harsh but when you think about it real packs of wolves react similar to things mentioned in the story I think so it went hand in hand I guess. Still there comes a point in time when my heart actually breaks for Lyra. I even had to get a tissue!

Incredible love story! I was completely immersed in it and look forward to reading the next book!

Miranda Ellis is a woman tormented. Plagued since birth by a strange and powerful gift, she has spent her entire life struggling to control her exceptional abilities. Yet one innocent but irreversible mistake has left her family's fortune decimated and forced her to wed London's most nefarious nobleman.
I have got to say I had low expectations when I began reading this book because I usually don't like historicals very much but this one grabbed me and would not turn me loose! It kind of has a feel of Beauty and the Beast but with extras like Miranda's power and it's even hard to say it's only purely historical because of the paranormal and mystery bits and such added in.

Firelight flowed off the pages leaving me devouring it and eager to find out what would happen next and the love story between Miranda and Archer was simply breathtaking for lack of a better word. Their's was an arranged marriage but once they actually began falling/feeling for each other the chemistry was just explosive and I could not wait until they realized what they had together.

Even if you have not really enjoyed historicals, like me, in the past you should totally give Firlight a try because it is much more!
