Book Review - What Lies Between us by John Marrs

What Lies Between UsWhat Lies Between Us by John Marrs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis: Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.

Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.

But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way—even if it kills her.

Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

My Thoughts: Oh My God this was one of those hard to put down books! It grabbed me by the hand and kept my fingers flipping way into the night and oh the chapters...they were those nice short ones I love but at the end of each chapter was a tiny cliffhanger that made you want to go on ahead and see what happens next and I'd end up staying up even longer than anticipated. Needless to say this was a very quick read!

I had a hard time trying to figure out who the biggest monster was in What Lies Between Us because all is not so black and white as you'd think between mother and daughter. My mouth dropped wide on so many parts! So many things get thrown at ya in this story! John Marrs has done it again! Totally one of my goto auto purchase authors!

I was provided a copy of this story for an honest review!

Book Review - Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

PumpkinheadsPumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis: Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.

Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.

But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.

Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .

What if their last shift was an adventure?

My Thoughts: This was a great Fallish read or heck a GREAT anytime read but I sure did get hungry with all the snack goodies they kept bringing up! I enjoyed the friendship amongst Josiah and Deja and how they kept running from site to site so Josiah could speak to the "girl of his dreams" but circumstances, "fate" kept intervening. Sometimes things have to smack you head on in the face to open your eyes! Loved Loved Loved this! I wanted to pop Josiah on the head so many times! How blind can one person be?

Review - Good Intentions (The Road to Salvation, #3) by Pembroke Sinclair

Synopsis: Katie has been through Hell—literally—and discovered that it wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be. In fact, she kind of enjoyed it. She got to be with Josh, found out about her past, and discovered who she wanted to be as a person. Katie didn’t care that her actions went against social norms. She was happy.

But things are changing—again. Wes has come back into her life, and that can only mean trouble. His presence threatens to unravel her new-found happiness. She can’t allow that. She won’t let him back in. Yet, Katie can’t push him away.

Thrown back into a state of confusion and uncertainty, Katie is once again forced to pick sides, and in the process, she may lose herself.

My Thoughts: Let me begin by saying if you have not read the first two books of this series I advise it before trying to jump into this one so you will have an idea of what is going on. They are quick and fast reads so it wont take you long to get caught up. (The Appeal of Evil Review), (Dealing with Devils Review)

The story has gotten better and better in each book and now we have made it to another crescendo as we go into Good Intentions. We left off with Katie being asked by Wes "What have you done?" Yep Wes is back and although Katie can't decide if his motives are pure she begins having doubts where Josh is concerned "FINALLY".

I still find Katie infuriating but she has "grown" a bit throughout the series or at least has started having a better thought process. She has began questioning her decisions and why she felt certain ways so I have to give her that at least.

I really loved this series, after I got past Katie being so childish, but must say the last book, Good Intentions, was my favorite of the three. I enjoy how everything came together at the end. Was on pins and needles a few times as it seemed things were not going to go as I had hoped but everything worked out for the best.

I'm not sure if this is the final book or not as there was no cliff hanger at the end like the first two but there is certainly room for more action should the author decide to continue it. I would enjoy reading more for sure but if not I am totally satisfied with the ending.

Review: Burning Blue by Paul Griffin

Synopsis: How far would you go for love, beauty, and jealousy?

When Nicole Castro, the most beautiful girl in her wealthy New Jersey high school, is splashed with acid on the left side of her perfect face, the whole world takes notice.

But quiet loner Jay Nazarro does more than that--he decides to find out who did it. Jay understands how it feels to be treated like a freak, and he also has a secret: He's a brilliant hacker. But the deeper he digs, the more danger he's in--and the more he falls for Nicole.

Too bad everyone is turning into a suspect, including Nicole herself.

Goodreads Page

My Thoughts: I didn't think I would like this as much as I did but I found myself immersed in the pages and couldn't finish it fast enough. I guess I just went into it feeling like I "knew all the answers" about who done it and so forth but boy I was smacked in the face royally when the actual culprit is revealed! I totally did not see that one coming!

I figured it would be another "geek boy in love with high school princess" story but it was so much more. In fact it hardly had much romancy stuff in it. It was more a mystery of who done it and why which was very refreshing.

The characters were very down to earth every day folks which made them easy to relate to. I didn't think I would like Nicole because I figured she would be the basic obnoxious drama queen who only cared about how she looked and if she broke a nail it would be the end of the world but it was refreshing to find out how much she hardly cared about her looks and how mostly it was her mom who had always pushed her into doing beauty pageants and so forth.

The story is told from Jay's point of view with a few of Nicole's journal entries mixed in. Jay has always felt like an outsider or freak and knows how Nicole must be feeling about now because of losing her perfect appearance so he decides to do his own investigative work to figure out who the perp is. He soon realizes his job is not gonna be easy because almost everybody is a suspect meanwhile Nicole begins to have feelings for Jay because he is the first person in her life to seem to like her and be nice to her simply to be nice and not because she is beautiful or rich or whatever.

Very quick fun read!

Voortman Vanilla Wafers

We have always loved the vanilla sugar wafers that Little Debbie used to put out but they have been discontinued for a while now and we have searched and searched for a similar replacement for them but until now no others really came close to the taste we loved and enjoyed from the Little Debbie Brand.

We had never tried this brand of cookies before so on a whim while shopping at Wal-mart last night we decided to pick up a package and was pleasantly surprised how close they came to the texture and flavor of the Little Debbie ones that we liked! We grabbed a cup of milk and sat there and had eaten the entire package like little piggies before we knew it!

I know they have other flavors and even offer a sugar free package but we are partial to the vanilla ones. We will totally be purchasing many more packages of these! I actually hope the hubs brings some more home after work! LOL

Review - The Devil Inside by Jenna Black

Possession. Murder. Mayhem.
Let the games begin...

Synopsis: Exorcism isn’t a job, it’s a calling—and a curse. Just ask Morgan Kingsley, a woman who has a stronger aura than any Demon. Or so she thought. Now, in a pair of black leather pants and a kick-ass tattoo, Morgan is heading back to Philadelphia after a nasty little exorcism—and her life is about to be turned upside down… by the Demon that’s gotten inside her.

Review: OMG I LOVED this book! Morgan was a hard character for me to relate to on some levels at first but the more I read the more intrigued with her and her life that I became. She comes off hard and kinda uncaring in the beginning almost to the point of being plum bitchy but the deeper into the story you go you understand that part of that has to do with her job as an exorcist and alot to do with her raising.

I think the turning point for me on beginning to open up to Morgan was when she was tossed in jail for performing an illegal exorcism because she started showing signs of weakness, and her walls started crumbling around her as she has to determine who she can trust.

The Devil Inside has a bit of something for all...demons, treachery, sex, and a good many twists and omg moments!

Product Review - Snapea's by Harvest Snaps

The hubby and I was grocery shopping in Walmart over the weekend and in the produce aisle I ran across a display shelf for these Snapea's made by Harvest Snaps/Calbee and on a whim decided to give them a try. At the time I didn't realize there were 6 flavors to choose from....I just grabbed a bag which happened to be the Black Pepper flavor and oh my gosh they were SOOOO Good! And according to the package they are good for you as well!

They contain actual green beans and have no artificial colors or flavors and one serving is equal to 22 baked snapea crisps! Supposed to be a good source of fiber as well!

They are crispy like potato chips but have a really mild veggie taste to them. They are lightly salted and are actually supposed to be able to go on salads and such but heck I ate them straight from the bag just like I would a potato chip they were so yummy! I totally could not put them down! I just am so sick of regular chips and am happy to have found these and hope to try some of the other flavors next.

Review: It would be not enough to say I LOVE Travis Walker and his story but I am going to say it anyways. Burned my Kindle reading this one because it was just such a read where I couldn't read it all at once and had to keep stopping and taking in what I had read and maybe once or twice maybe having to take the time to wipe a few tears away. It was heartbreaking yet sweet all at the same time as Travis is forced to grow up way to fast by having to step up and be the man of the house, quit school to work, and tend to his ailing mother. My heart went out to him. No matter what ordeal life tossed his way he knew what he needed to do and one way or another he tried his best to get er done.

I know alot of folks blame the mother for not stepping up and being the parent but I could sympathize with her as well because she had been dealt a huge blow and sometimes the only way a person can cope when being forced into a corner is to put up a wall around themself. Once they have taken and dealt with all they can a mental shield goes up saying enough and it appears the person just doesn't care but that is so far from the truth. Truth is they have reverted back to almost being in the mindset of a baby or young child needing somebody to care for them until eventually they can tear the wall back down and learn to live again. She was so lucky to have Travis.

This was not the story I expected when I picked it up to read but I am very satisfied with the story it turned out to be.

Review - One Foot In The Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Synopsis:

You can run from the grave, but you can’t hide…

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She’s still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind.
Review:

Holy freaking cow this one was even better than Book 1! Cat is back and in charge and Bones is hot on her tail...er I mean trail?

It broke Cat's heart to have to leave Bones high and dry in Halfway to the Grave to become a secret government agent fighting for the lives taken by ruthless vampires but it was the only way to save him or so she thought. I hated that Cat started dating a new man in this book but I knew he could never take Bones place NEVER I tell you because Bones is a hard act to follow! Bones is my freaking hero and he is so in love with Cat it's pitiful.

There's alot of action here and I was flying thru the pages as the secrets literally bled there way thru. Had quite a few mouth dropping moments but what do you expect with Cat and Bones other than that?

One of my favorite quotes from One Foot in the Grave was when Bones left his ex-girl in the apartment with Cat and they got into a cat fight...yes pun intended!

"I am going to knock the slut out of you, Annette," I gritted between clenched teeth. "And that should take some doing, you uppity English tramp!"

Review - Montana Morning by Sharon Flesch

Nestled in a remote Montana mountain valley, this has always been a peaceful place. Jack, his dad, Will, and Andy have always kept it simple - hard work and a feeling of contentment at the end of the day. They like it that way.

When Jack finds his long lost daughter, his life seems complete until tragedy strikes leaving him to raise an injured grandson he has never met. The men are definately going to need help.

Jack thinks he's found just what the doctor ordered. What he doesn't realize is the 'sweet little lady' is going to turn their lives upside down and inside out. Determined to turn the old ranch house into a home and this bunch of contankerous men into a family, Adrianna Banks, armed with her faith in God and a quiet sense of humor, sets out to just that.

One of the most touching stories I believe I have ever read! Very rare can I say I love all the characters in a story but this is it! In their own ways I enjoyed spending time with one and all and actually kept putting the book down on purpose just so it would last longer as I hated for it to end. I began to almost feel like a part of the family and now that it's over I seriously feel an emptiness inside.

The synopsis doesn't begin to do this story justice and is a bit misleading in my opinion because for one Jack only gets to meet his daughter for a few seconds as she lay in his arms dying and although Addy is a strong woman in her faith the book is not one of those overly religious stories that tries to ram it down your throat. Addy made me giggle all thru-out the book as she whips all these males into shape and forges a family out of the bunch of them on a modern day ranch so remote that they still don't even have telephones or alot of electricity. (they do use cell phones and such) It's hard to imagine living like that cooking on wood stoves and all but I bet I could get used to it! LOL

Review - A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest

On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake. A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood. She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine. An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains. Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Holy Cow I Loved It! (5/5 Stars Loved It!) I have not felt so moved and into a vampire story in so long but the emotion that flows between Derek and Sofia as they explore their feelings for each other was just so powerful I hung on every word. I think there may have even been an instance I swooned.

One of my favorite phrases was:

"He was about to sink his teeth into my bare neck and drink my blood. I had every right to feel violated, but I didn’t. What does that say about me?"

The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch

Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 304 pages
Format: Hardback

Rating: 5/5
In an America devastated by war and plague, the only way to survive is to keep moving.
Loved this story! Read it in almost one sitting it was so good. Stephen is a young teen who has never really known what normal was because every since he was born his family has been on the move never taking up roots anyplace because of a horrid war and plague of influenza not to mention being salvagers (folks who piddle thru places looking for things to trade) and having to always look over your shoulder for thieves and slavers.

Stephen was drilled to not trust other people and to survive at any means possible so it was really hard on him when tragedy strikes his family and he is forced to rely on strangers for help.

I hope I never have to live like Stephen did but the author makes the scenes so real I could almost imagine I was hiding or running right alongside him. I felt so much compassion for him and desperately wanted him to see another world than the one his stronghanded grandfather had instilled into him. There is good and bad in all of us and not everybody has hidden agendas when they offer a helping hand. Sometimes you just have to trust folks and hope for the best.

Kirby Puckernut is Santa's cleverest little elf. While dreaming up marvelous toys for good girls and boys, Kirby has his best idea yet - a real elf in every home, all through the holidays, spreading Christmas Magic! Santa finds the perfect family and allows Kirby to serve as the test elf for the first momentous visit. Fun and adventure are at every turn, but not everything goes as planned...
I loved the story and the pages are so beautifully illustrated! This will be a nice addition to any child's library! I think I enjoyed it alot because it was the story of a family I could relate to with real like children and not the so fabulous ones you normally read about that make you think that that is soooo not a real person or family. The two smaller children you could easily see they still held Christmas magic in their little hearts and minds whereas the to big for her britches older pre-teen sister had all but turned into a Scrooge but then it is the holiday season and more "magic" happens this time of year than most any other time so maybe just maybe they'll be hope for this family yet!

Rating: 5/5

When longtime best friends, Patsy Leslie and Louise Jernigan decide to jump-start their not-so-dead libidos, quilting and bridge suddenly take a backseat to, well, more amorous pursuits. Local tongues wag, and Patsy's son and Louise's daughter—who happen to be married to each other—demand answers to the burning questions Who is this man and where's the rest of Mama's skirt?
This was just laugh out loud funny! I like reading in bed at night and my hubby had to keep shushing me so he could sleep because it kept me laughing so hard I'd be in tears.

Both the main characters, Patsy and Louise, were plum adorable in older woman fashion, both were pretty much set in their ways but still felt a little something was missing in their lives and they just refused to grow old so gracefully without getting out there just one more time and getting a bit wild, Patsy more so than Louise. LOL

They have been friends since grade school but they soon realize that maybe what they thought they were missing just wasn't worth the price of losing each other.

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Let me count the times I put this book down before reading it from cover to cover......ummmm I can't get past one!!! This is one of the first books in a long while that just freaking totally blew my mind it was just that doggone awesome and I can't wait for Onyx!

I really hated Daemon in the beginning (I heard a hush of gasps) because he was so obnoxious and mean to Katy but once I came to realize why, I fell in love and my heart would pitter patter at every mere mention of his name...Daemon (see there it went again!)

One of the biggest things that drew me into this book other than omg dare I breathe his sweet name...Daemon hummmmmmmm (daydream break) was the fact that Katy was a book blogger! I loved reading about one of "us"! I can't remember right off ever reading another story that involved a book blogger and it made me feel more involved somehow or maybe better connected is the better phrase? Anyhow it was a total plus!

I came away from Obsidian with the knowledge that they do exist and the truth is out there! (I have been dying to say that like forever!)

This is a really cute story about a platypus who gains instant fame for being a ferociously fast swimmer. Paddy doesn't really welcome the fame though and would much rather stay home and swim in his "own" swimming spots over the hustle and bustle of the big swim competitions forced on him by Sir Hugh.

My kids and I enjoyed learning about the platypus which we didn't know anything about or how they lived and the book streamlines with our little girls reading level because it is a chapter book and she is just now getting on that school level where these are a must read. The cartoon illustrations kept our younger child interested in the story as well.

kudos to what Paddy did at the end of the story! I think that is exactly what I woud have done as well!

It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going.
2 words- Super Amazing
This is Not a Test unleashed so many different emotions in me. It found hidey holes inside me that made me feel each of the characters which usually doesn't happen for me. I usually can relate in some way or form to one maybe two characters in a story but this one was told in such a way that I felt as though I was taking on each of their identities one by one as the story unfolded.

This is NOT your ordinary zombie fiction. If you go into the story looking for a nice erratic zombie tale full of blood and gore and all that then you are going to really be let down. This is a tale of survival yes but it's much deeper than that. It involves despair before the zombies ever come into the picture and then leads up to survival, letting go, and eventually forgivness. There were times I was so angry and others I felt so sad I almost wanted to cry. My emotions were just all over the place reading this. I realized that there were things much worse than zombies to fear!

Ohh this was a wonderful book to help children understand the importance of good manners! Rosalind and her pet dragon, Sparkler have dreadful manners and the queen sends them on a quest to find good manners or else! Very cute story and easy for a child to understand as well as having beautiful illustrations both girl and boy will enjoy!

My kids are badly in need of more stories such as this because there manners can surely be improved upon. Kids are growing up way to fast now-a-days and manners and pleasantries are getting lost by the wayside. Kids today get away with murder compared to the way things were when I was a kid!

Filled with beautifully illustrated pages and a message for young and old alike. Rose lives in a war stricken country and longs to be able to see her other aunts, uncles, and cousins but the war makes it so difficult for get togethers. Rose gets a surprise on her birthday that helps alot.

I can't imagine being away from family or having to live the life of Rose in a jungle but the story tells how Rose and her family overcomes and prevails and makes the most of life as they have it. They don't have all the cool things we have like air conditioning or electric stoves and television but yet the pages are filled with laughter and joy. Families actually sit down to eat together, kids actually have chores to do and everybody is your neighbor. Heck 50 - 100 years ago I may have been describing our way of life huh?

Oh my Gosh do not even get me started on how I feel about this cookbook! This has quickly became one of the most used cookbooks in our home for the simple reason is it's typically geared towards mainly "grilling" menu's and such. We are a family that loves to grill but we were kinda limited to things like steak, hamburgers, hot dogs...you get the picture?

Simply Grilling showed us how simple it was to do vegetables and seafood on the grill and it just opened up our eyes to so many more possiblilities than what we had been doing. We increased our grill usuage threefold and you can do alot of these recipes on your indoor grill as well with minor changes and that is great when it's too hot out or rainy to be doing outdoor grilling.

One other major thing I enjoy about Simply Grilling other than the wide assortment of food is each recipe has it's own page with photo along with cooking tips, suggested sides, and other neat info and not just a wad of pictureless recipes on a page.

I always knew you "could" do lots more with your grill but was always afraid to try it because it seemed to much trouble or time consuming and having this cookbook on my shelf gave me the encouragement I needed to try these new things.
