Gabriel stirred beside her, his thigh pressing against hers as he turned to speak to the bride, now seated on the other side of him at the head table. Warmth seeped through fabric, creating a telltale flutter in her stomach, a momentary respite from the clawing worry. Her mind drifted as a distant memory beckoned her . . . a picnic on a bluff overlooking the sea, where she and Gabriel had sat side by side in the warm sun, touching.

Isabella shook herself and gritted her teeth. Why was she remembering their picnic now? It had been so long ago, and had been made meaningless by—but she would not think about that.

Instead, she let her gaze float across the sea of faces, searching for Captain Sutherland. He was at the edge of the room, but his back was to her. Surely he could feel her eyes on him and would turn and smile. Seeing his face would warm her more than Gabriel’s thigh, which was still touching hers, creating little tingles along her leg.

As if he felt the tingles, too, Gabriel turned, and the heat intensified with the expression on his face. He didn’t move away, instead he lifted his fork and grinned at her before taking a bite.

“You’re not eating, my dear. Is the food not to your liking?”

“I’m not very hungry.”

“It’s been hours since breakfast. And there will only be a light supper around midnight tonight. Unless you’re hoarding food in your room, you should eat. What if you faint? I’ll have to carry you to your room, perhaps fling you over my shoulder like a sack of flour, my hand resting on your delectable bottom.”

She could imagine his hand pressing her bottom, perhaps kneading it after they found a secluded spot.

She squirmed in her seat. “You know, Gabriel, your manners are atrocious,” she hissed. “How dare you speak to me in such an intimate way?”

He leaned closer. “Afraid someone might overhear? Or do you not want them to see the delightful blush on your cheeks and wonder what caused it?”

“You are insufferable.”

He moved back and placed his hand over his heart. “To think you were complimenting me just a few minutes ago.”

“I should have known better.”

His grin lit up his face, showing perfect teeth and dancing eyes. She didn’t know whether she wanted to smack him or kiss him. Both urges were strong. Neither was acceptable in company.

The Darknet Chapter 18 – A Hillside Dump

The ride to the crime scene was deathly silent. Nothing personal. That was just Jake’s usual way, an angry meditation to prep for facing down the grim reaper’s handy work. I could have let the Crown Vic chauffeur us but driving gave me something to do. It was a short trip down the Shoreway towards Battery Park. We got off at West 49th Street, near the Parkview Nite Club, a blues club Jake used to haunt in his youth until it went too upscale for his taste. The collection of official vehicles with flashing lights on Herman Avenue made GPS unnecessary.

As usual, Jake jumped out and went right for the body before the engine was even off. I tracked down the patrol unit that was first on the scene to get briefed. The guys were responding to a call from Animal Control which got a call from an elderly dog walker who noticed a growing circle of buzzards overhead and called to get a presumed carcass removed from the neighborhood before it drew coyotes which surely, she feared, would have eventually turned their hunger towards her beloved Bichon. I spotted her easily, cradling her pet in her arms among the gaggle of gawkers pooling outside the crime scene tape. Even though patrol had taken her statement, I went to speak with her. I didn’t expect to get much more from her—and I didn’t—but sometimes it’s more about “customer relations” than police work, and witnesses feel slighted if they don’t get to speak with a detective. Something Jake had no patience for…

The End of the World!  (As We Know It)

It was kind of nice when I was writing the Murder by Munchausen Trilogy, because guys like Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk were making a whole lot of noise about the evils of Artificial Intelligence—and that kind of fit into my stories about robots being hacked and reprogrammed into hit men.

Hawking is a pretty darn smart guy. He wrote about the history of time, black holes and the grand design of the Universe. He said that “…artificial intelligence could one day spell the end of the human race.” That’s definitely something to think about. I was just planning on killing off a wayward husband and emulating a serial killer or two.

And Elon Musk is a smart guy, too. He’s in charge of Tesla electric cars and Space X—and he’s even launched a Tesla into outer space on his reusable rockets.  And since 2017, he’s been working with a company called Neuralink which is trying to turn cloud-based AI into an extension of the human brain to enable mankind to seamlessly communicate with technology without the need for an actual, physical interface.  Wew!

And Musk says, “With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon.”

And he’s a real billionaire! So, what do you think, should we believe him?

Okay, then we can sit back in front of our big screen smart TVs and wait for the day to come when Cyberdyne nukes us all with their Skynet Artificial Intelligence defense network. Though you have to wonder how truly “self-aware” that Artificial Intelligence really is…afterall who is going to reboot the system when it goes down or plug in all the “critically low powered” smart phones and iPads, if mankind is all toast?

In Munchausen, the evil isn’t really in the Artificial Intelligence.  Oh sure, the cyber-punked androids are bad-ass when the time comes to snuff out a life or two. But the true evil is in the homo sapiens—right, “wise men,” indeed. How we flatter ourselves.

The robots themselves are as harmless as Alexa and Siri until someone comes along and says, “Hey, maybe you could do this one little thing for me…you know, kill a guy.”

Truth be told, when I look at Artificial Intelligence, it strikes me as being kind of dumb. How many times does AI have to show me yet another on-line advertisement for the product I bought last week? And if they’re so smart, why are they in “advertising” anyway?

And how about predictive texting? 

You know how you’re not supposed to argue with stupid people, because they’ll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience? Yup, surely that frustration may well cause the end of the human race by us all hanging ourselves.

Maybe Steve and Elon see something I don’t, but in truth—at this point in time—Artificial Intelligence is like the margarine of brain power.

Kelly Jackson’s New Life

Hello! My name is Kelly Jackson, and I currently live in the small town of Redwood Cove located on the northern coast of California. I am the new manager of Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast. It’s beautiful Victorian-style inn with the lovely Pacific Ocean within sight from many of its rooms. I grew up on a Wyoming horse and cattle ranch, so being here is a very different experience for me, and one I love.

I recently met Diane Wilcox, the owner of Redwood Cove Stable and discovered that she knows my parents. It certainly is a small world sometimes! Since I love to ride horses, she offered to let me ride Nezi, a leopard appaloosa.

In case you’re unfamiliar with what a horse like that looks like, let me explain. Nezi’s coat is white covered with black dots and circles of various sizes, hence the use of the word leopard because of his spots. I took Diane up on her offer, and I really enjoyed the ride. The horse had a gentle gait and responded well to commands. She said I could ride him any time he was available.

I’m looking forward to bringing my quarter horse, Lucy, here from the ranch once I get more settled in. She’s a buckskin with a gold-colored coat and a black mane and tail. I trained her for barrel racing. This is a timed event where you go around three barrels set in a clover leaf pattern as fast as you can and is popular at rodeos. It takes all my strength to stay on!

I also love dogs. Fred, a Bassett Hound, lives with his owners, Helen Rogers and her son Tommy, in a small cottage on the grounds of the property. His big smile, short-legged chunky body, and his wagging tail always bring a smile to my face. Helen is an assistant at the inn as well as the baker for all of our scrumptious breakfast treats.

We currently have a guest staying with us who has a service dog. His name is Rex. He’s a cattle dog and is trained as both a seizure alert dog and a seizure response dog. The difference is a seizure alert dog can sense when their owner is about to have a seizure and can warn them so they can prepare for the attack. This is an innate sense and dogs can’t be trained to do it. A response dog is taught how to help their owner when an attack starts. Their tasks are specific to each person's individual needs. For example, the dog might position itself on the ground next to its owner or bark to alert family members.

My boss, Michael Corrigan, built a community center to help the townspeople of Redwood Cove. There are many classes offered aimed at the betterment of their lives. Cabins were built to house some of the homeless veterans living in the area.

That is where I met another service dog recently. One of the vets at the center owns a dog named Toby that is trained to help with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). His owner’s name is Garl Hancock. I asked him about his unusual name and he said, “Named after my grandpappy. Family figured there was probably a mistake on his birth certificate. Hey, if it was good enough for him his entire life, it’s good enough for me.”

Toby is the largest Great Dane I have ever seen. I think he’s bigger than the pony I grew up riding. He looks striking with his unique Harlequin colors, his white coat contrasting sharply with black patches. Garl commented a big man needs a big dog, so Toby came into his life.

I live in a beautiful area, have great people to work with, wonderful new friends, AND I have dogs and horses. How lucky could I get?

Synopsis: Kendra Troyer always knew she would leave Walnut Creek the first chance she got. Though she suffered through dark times in Columbus, Kendra found her faith in the Lord again, and years later, when she learned one of her good friends had died, she realized it was time to go home to those she left behind.

Back in Walnut Creek, Kendra has a life she never could have imagined: her own design shop, a pretty little house, and a tight-knit group of friends. After she settles down, though, unexpected visitors come knocking and dark memories begin to resurface. Complicating things even further is the ever-present Nate Miller, who now owns the hardware store two doors down and whose very presence stirs in Kendra a fierce need to turn away and hide from her past. My Thoughts: I read The Protective One from this series and loved it and this one ranks right up there with it! Another solid gem I have found!

I loved Kendra and felt really badly about her childhood and how emotional she felt for having to leave her younger siblings behind but felt she let her hurt feelings over something a fellow school member said in his teens when he was younger and less understanding about her have to much weight over her life. You can't just hang onto things like that in life or it will certainly drag you down especially when Nate is doing all he can to make things up to her.

I enjoyed when her sister Naomi can into the scene and how even this relationship had suffered over the years because of so many years of childhood abuse... the stress between them and how they come to terms with each other.

You can certainly read these books alone but I do feel you'd get a better understanding of some of the persons mentioned and how they are all connected if you go back and read them all in order.

“Do I know you?”
