Book Review - Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen

Other Birds

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis: Between the real and the imaginary, there are stories that take flight in the most extraordinary ways.

Right off the coast of South Carolina, on Mallow Island, The Dellawisp sits—a stunning old cobblestone building shaped like a horseshoe, and named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy.

When Zoey comes to claim her deceased mother’s apartment at the Dellawisp she meets her quirky and secretive neighbors, including a young woman with a past, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and a lonely chef, and three ghosts. The sudden death of one of Zoey's new neighbors sets off a search that leads to the island's famous author and to a long-estranged relative of the sisters.
Each of them has a story, and each story has an ending which hasn't yet been written.

My Thoughts: I loved so much about this story...the main thing it being set in my home state of South Carolina! I literally had to go in search of Mallow Island and see if it actually existed because the author made it seem so doggone real and I never have heard of dellawisp birds and had to look them up as well. Such beauties they are!

Right from the start as Zoey arrives at The Dellawisp and takes over her mother's condo I was immersed into her and the other residents lives. One of them drops dead on her first day and the story just picks up from there as mysterious things begin happening from night shadows and theft to ghosts and cornmeal!

Definitely had some twists I didn't see coming!

A story of mothers and love, loss and letting go, and just simply trying to find your way in a hard world.

Book Review - The Club by Ellery Lloyd

The Club

The Club by Ellery Lloyd
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Synopsis:  Everyone's Dying to Join . . .

The Home Group is a glamorous collection of celebrity members' clubs dotted across the globe, where the rich and famous can party hard and then crash out in its five-star suites, far from the prying eyes of fans and the media.

The most spectacular of all is Island Home—a closely-guarded, ultraluxurious resort, just off the English coast—and its three-day launch party is easily the most coveted A-list invite of the decade.

But behind the scenes, tensions are at breaking point: the ambitious and expensive project has pushed the Home Group's CEO and his long-suffering team to their absolute limits. All of them have something to hide—and that's before the beautiful people with their own ugly secrets even set foot on the island.

As tempers fray and behavior worsens, as things get more sinister by the hour and the body count piles up, some of Island Home’s members will begin to wish they’d never made the guest list.

My Thoughts: This had so much to offer but slightly just missed the mark for me. I tried to enjoy it but it had so many characters to keep up with and such long chapters I barely made it thru.

Book Review - Finlay Donovan Jumps The Gun by Elle Cosimano

Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun (Finlay Donovan, #3)

Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis: Author and single mom Finlay Donovan has been in messes before―after all, she's a pro at removing bloodstains for various unexpected reasons―but none quite like this. When Finlay and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero accidentally destroyed a luxury car that they had "borrowed" in the process of saving the life of Finlay's ex-husband, the Russian mob did her a favor and bought the car for her. And now Finlay owes them.

Mob boss Feliks is still running the show from behind bars, and he has a task for Finlay: find and identify a contract killer before the cops do. The problem is, the killer might be an officer themself.

My Thoughts: And the fun continues in this third installment of the adventures with Finlay and her trusty sidekick Vero! The beginning had me laughing so hard I was practically in tears. I was on the edge of my seat as I read and read and then when I realized what was happening man I about bust a gut I was laughing so hard! Then we get on into the story with our girls trying to get the mob off their back as well as Finlays ex trying to shimmy his way back with her ugh! We also get some hands on fun at the police academy with Finlays new beau.

I'm just loving and adoring this series and can't wait to see what's next!

Book Review - Any One Of Us by Martyn Ford

Any One of Us

Any One of Us by Martyn Ford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis: When Ruby hears from her best friend Elizabeth that two of their old classmates have been murdered, Ruby is more certain than ever that leaving her hometown was the right decision. But after Elizabeth suddenly stops responding to texts, and Ruby hears a third classmate has been killed, she knows in her heart what has happened. Elizabeth is dead too.

Missbrook Bay is a place haunted by memories Ruby wanted to forget, and people she never wanted to see again, but Ruby has no choice but to go back to investigate. While staying with her ex-boyfriend, she notices a pattern in their full school year photo—the killer seems to be working through victims in a specific order. And after her ex’s house is broken into, Ruby realises nowhere and no one is safe.

There are still many faces left in that photo. Any one of them could be the next victim—and any one of them could be the killer. And with each death, the killer is getting closer to Ruby.

My Thoughts: Any One of Us takes off with a bang with Ruby talking on the phone to an old high school friend about a classmates murder and then shortly thereafter her friend meets the same demise and with her profession of being a profiler she heads back home to help solve the murders. Once she gets home and settled the story starts running hot and cold for me as things start dragging a bit with such long chapters that really didn't say much. They seemed more filler than anything.

I found myself getting a little bored about the midway point but I kept reading because overall I really did enjoy the mystery and the characters when the action bits would take place.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for providing this copy for my honest review.

Book Review - The Children on the Hill by Jennifer McMahon

The Children on the Hill

The Children on the Hill by Jennifer McMahon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

 Synopsis: A genre-defying new novel, inspired by Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankenstein, which brilliantly explores the eerie mysteries of childhood and the evils perpetrated by the monsters among us.

1978: at her renowned treatment center in picturesque Vermont, the brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Hildreth, is acclaimed for her compassionate work with the mentally ill. But when she's home with her cherished grandchildren, Vi and Eric, she’s just Gran—teaching them how to take care of their pets, preparing them home-cooked meals, providing them with care and attention and love.

Then one day Gran brings home a child to stay with the family. Iris—silent, hollow-eyed, skittish, and feral—does not behave like a normal girl.

Still, Violet is thrilled to have a new playmate. She and Eric invite Iris to join their Monster Club, where they catalogue all kinds of monsters and dream up ways to defeat them. Before long, Iris begins to come out of her shell. She and Vi and Eric do everything together: ride their bicycles, go to the drive-in, meet at their clubhouse in secret to hunt monsters. Because, as Vi explains, monsters are everywhere.

2019: Lizzy Shelley, the host of the popular podcast Monsters Among Us, is traveling to Vermont, where a young girl has been abducted, and a monster sighting has the town in an uproar. She’s determined to hunt it down, because Lizzy knows better than anyone that monsters are real—and one of them is her very own sister.

My Thoughts: Holy smokes I loved this book! I enjoyed it from the first sentence until the last and flew thru it like a mad woman!

I have read at least one other book from this author and she is famous for her dual time line stories and is one author who can really make them work in her favor. I'm not able to pinpoint which I enjoyed the best however in this particular story because at different times they both had a different type appeal that drew me in and made me want to stay up into the night to finish the story.

Frankenstein has always been one of my favorite childhood monsters and I love what Jennifer did with it here amongst the three children. As bits begin to become apparent as to what has happened to Iris the story begins to open up and build and build until the twists start appearing and flooring me and once it was all said and done I could have kicked myself for my mistake in the reading that was so darn clever! Kudos to Jennifer for another fine tale!

I thought my tiny hometown of Nowhere would be the ideal out-of-the-way refuge to wait out the media storm.

It wasn’t.

My little brother had moved into a treehouse. The obscure mountain town had decided to attract tourists with the world’s largest collection of big things... Yes, Nowhere now has the world’s largest pizza cutter. And lawn flamingo. And ball of yarn...

And then I stumbled over a dead body.

All the evidence points to my brother being the bad guy. I may have been out of his life for a while—okay, five years—but I know he’s no killer. Can I clear my brother before he becomes Nowhere’s next Big Fatality?

Excerpt:

Just to be clear, it wasn’t my fault.

It wasn’t my responsibility either. But when my client slipped me a mickey, there’s a principle involved. Though after falling down a flight of hotel stairs, I wasn’t sure what that principle was anymore.

I staggered to my feet, lost the rest of my dinner in a potted palm, and careened through the door into the hotel lobby.

Guests turned to stare, and why not? My blond hair fountained out of a high, pre-makeup-removal ponytail. Camo pajamas and flip-flops completed my tipsy party-girl look.

I staggered deeper into the chic gray and white lobby. Lights glinted off the chrome chandeliers, and I winced at their dizzying starbursts.

My fists clenched on my phone. Or at least I thought they did. My fingers were a little numb. But I’d expelled most of the drugs, and I was going to catch my wayward client, Toomas Koppel, and surveil him until it hurt. Him. Hurt him.

That wasn’t ego. I was well aware of my many flaws. But I also knew who I was and what I was, and what I was was very, very good at surveillance.

Plus, I was an optimist. Personal protection agents, otherwise known as bodyguards, frequently were. We liked to think we were tough and cynical, since our job was to watch for trouble. But you didn’t get into this business if you didn’t think you and your client would survive it. Maybe that was why I’d been snookered by mine. I still had no idea why he’d drugged me, but I was going to find out.

Book Tour/Giveaway - Murder at Serengeti Plains by Pat Duggan

Murder at Serengeti Plains

by Pat Duggan

GENRE:   Cozy Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Murder at Serengeti Plains is the third mystery novel in the series, featuring amateur sleuths Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl.  The earlier novels are Murder at Eagles Nest and Could They Be Twins?
The book is set in a new residential subdivision, Serengeti Plains, built by the renowned local builder, Zebra Homes.  It is located in the peaceful, historic town of Centerville, Ohio.  However, peace is shattered when the new residents are awakened one morning by the sound of police sirens.  The procession of police cars, come to rest in their own neighborhood.  A body has been discovered!  Was it an accident or was it murder?
Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl have recently moved into this new subdivision.  They have previously helped the police to solve murders in both Florida and Ohio, but they did not expect to find one on their own doorstep.  When the police begin to look at their friend as the perpetrator, they find themselves drawn into yet another murder investigation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

The National News on television led off with a headline about house prices and the shortage of homes for sale throughout the country.  In Centerville, Ohio there was a growing, new sub-division, Serengeti Plains, being built by Zebra Homes.  The builder named the development after a district in Africa where zebras roam wild.  His company was well respected and recognized for building beautiful single-family homes, laid out to form desirable neighborhoods and the Serengeti Community was fast becoming a gem amongst their many projects in the area.

The construction site was a hive of activity, with multiple homes in various stages of completion as demand for new homes pressured the builder to construct his properties as quickly as possible.  There were contractors of various disciplines swarming all over the building site, working feverishly to complete each unit while maintaining the builder’s required quality and standards.

All of this activity invariably led to disagreements and friction amongst the workers.  One man in particular, Larry Cox, who worked for the excavation company and held an inflated opinion of himself always seemed to be at the center of much of the unrest.  He liked to ‘throw his weight around,’ and talked down to the other workers on the site.  He continually bragged about his thirty years’ experience and seemed to think this cemented his superiority over anyone and everyone on the building site, including buyers who frequently visited the site to watch the progress of their ‘soon to be’ new home.

The Challenges of Publishing Your Book

About twenty years ago, I first wrote a book and thought about getting it published.  However, at that time the challenges, at least for me, were insurmountable.  One option was to find a publisher willing to take on a new, novice writer.  I attended conferences and scheduled interviews with publishers.  This led to submitting several one page synopses and subsequently receiving brief rejection letters.  It became clear to me that in order to attract a publisher, one needed to have a successful book, but having a successful book seemed to require a publisher, a ‘no-win’ situation.

Option two was to publish the book myself.  At that time, there were companies who would produce the book for you.  Unfortunately, the cost was based on the number of copies of the book you required.  I quickly realized it would involve a considerable outlay of money and would result in me holding a large inventory of books with few outlets for sales.  Finally, I abandoned the whole idea.

Fast forward to 2015 when we started traveling and I wrote Finding God in an RV.  When I researched self-publishing this time, I discovered Kindle Direct Publishing.  First of all, they are affiliated to Amazon, which automatically provides a built-in outlet for book sales.  Also, they utilized a completely different concept for publishing the books.  Instead of producing multiple books and holding them for sale in a warehouse, they print one book at a time as needed.  Their service allows the writer to submit his/her manuscript in their required format, together with the cover, at no cost.  Alternatively, the writer can hire the service to complete different portions of the book, like cover design, as needed.  In my case, the only cost I incurred was about $20 for a proof copy, sent to me by express mail as I was too impatient to accept slow mail and pay less.

Publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing has proved very effective for me.  Of course, I still have all the marketing challenges, but my books are available everywhere, not just in my garage!

Writing was a whole new direction for Pat, which began with two non-fiction books – The Power Within and Finding God in an RV.  Then she branched into writing fiction as she turned to her love for solving murder mysteries and the challenge to figure out ‘whodunit!’

Sadly, their traveling days are over, but settling down has brought its own reward as it inspired this latest novel.
