Book Tour/Giveaway - Parallax by Dixie Jackson

 Parallax by Dixie Jackson

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 GENRE: Romance Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB: Six years later, Trent Wayland still isn’t over his spring fling. Probably because he was convinced when he married Captain Leila O’Neil, their fling would go on a lifetime. Leila is his soul mate and Trent knows it. He might not admit it on a regular basis, but that doesn’t negate the raw emotion she draws out of him each and every time he thinks about her. Forget the fact his heart splits in two all over again when he’s afforded the luxury of hearing her voice. That doesn’t happen often, however. Leila only tosses a handful of words his way when she initiates the weekly video calls he’s allowed with the other love of his life, their daughter Lucy. Once upon a time, Leila O’Neil wanted to be a Marine when she grew up. She worked hard, she landed a seat at the Academy, and she was the head of her class. Then her dream was destroyed and she traded it in for a new one at the nearest Coterie portal. She wears so many faces and so many hats, at some point she lost track of her soul. That didn’t really bother her until Trent Wayland came along and almost peeled her dressing room curtain back nearly exposing her innermost person. The real person, the real Leila, who once upon a time wanted to be a Marine when she grew up. Leila misses the real person, and realizes it at the worst possible moment. With her daughter’s life on the line and Trent on the scene of the crime, Leila figures out she’s been using her hurt and anger to fuel all the wrong goals. In a daring move, she puts it all on the line, hoping it’s enough to gain her freedom from her handlers and her husband’s forgiveness.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT: “Can this wait?” she asked, clearing her throat and speaking in a much lower, calmer voice than she felt like using on him at the moment. “I need to compartmentalize everything that’s coming at me all at once so I can process it in some sort of orderly fashion and manage to not get us killed before we get the chance to talk about what may or may not be going on between us.” “Do you have a label for that box?” Trent drilled, glaring at her. “Which one?” She tapped her fingernails against the table and pursed her lips, trying to stay the wellspring of anger bubbling up at his completely inappropriate timing. And if he only knew. Leila had so many boxes she neatly placed things in it’d be easy to completely lose track of the exact number and location inside her head of all them. “The one you stuff us in every time things reach a point you might actually have to say it.” When his nostrils flared, Leila could no longer hold back the sarcastic cynic she could be so easily. “Say what?” She quirked one side of her mouth up and all but batted her lashes, daring him to continue down this path. “You know very well what,” Trent roared, slamming a fist against the table causing the silverware still setting on the edges of plates on the other end of it to rattle and tea to spill out over the top of her unfinished cup, which was most likely cold and bitter by now. “You’ve not said it in a long while, either, you know.” Leila pulled her now drying hair behind her ears and gnawed on the inside of her lip. Trent didn’t answer, instead just sat back down and grabbed his phone. “I have my reasons but they’re not the same as yours, you coward. You’re afraid.”
From The Author:
Through My Eyes
First, I’d like to thank Gimme the Scoop Reviews for hosting my tour today. It’s a pleasure to be here!
One of the things I get asked most about are the things that inspire me and help me build the world in which my characters live. That leads me to remember the first, and best, piece of advice I got when I first began my journey to publication. Write what you know, and if you don’t know it, learn it. That bit of advice rings true today, yesterday, and forever. Researching, honestly, is one of my favorite parts of the job. I love learning knew things and I love digging around for facts.
For the most part, I do write what I know and put a spin on it. It is fiction, after all, so stretching the truth creatively but still within reason is totally acceptable. And what is it I write that I know? The military aspects I incorporate into my romantic suspense stories. My husband recently retired after thirty years of service in the Marine Corps, and if there’s anything I know, it’s military life. That life also took us on many adventures. I routinely use my knowledge of people, places, and things to draw inspiration and do lend realism to my writing.
The S3 series is a bit different from my other more mainstream military romances in that I’ve created a world in which there are dark ops agencies playing by their own rules. That gave me the latitude to create situations and consequences that might not hold true in real life but work in a fictitious world of my creating. In Parallax, book one of the series, it was also fun making the heroine the star of the show through Leila O’Neil who’s a kick-butt kind of gal who can hold her own in a firefight and still manage to look pretty at the end of the day. She’s a collage of hard-charging female marines I was acquainted with during my husband’s active duty days. We don’t often see the female lead in romantic suspense taking on the role of being the one to save the day and take names. I wanted to expand on that twist and thus Leila was born.
The places Parallax is set in include the east coast of North Carolina, the Middle East, Spain and Morocco. I spent many years on the east coast of North Carolina so it’s a favorite backdrop of mine to use since I’m so familiar with it. While I’ve not visited the Middle East, Spain, or Morocco, my husband has ported all over the world at one point or other and is a great research consultant when it comes to locations. Having all the travels under our belt helps in being able to describe things accurately.
I’d say, overall, I try to let my characters live through my eyes and see, feel, smell, taste, and hear everything I have over the years, which gives them a wide-ranging collection of experiences.
Thanks again for hosting me today and thanks to the readers for dropping in to chat with me.
Rita has committed suicide. When disturbing details start to surface, Emily puts her highflying career on hold to seek out those responsible. She hires an American private investigator Robert Blackmoor; a motorbike riding, no-frills, computer hacker who will use any means necessary to unearth the truth. Not surprisingly, Robert uncovers secrets from Emily’s troubled childhood and chips away at the glossy veneer of deceit which masks the truth behind, not only Rita’s life, but Emily’s imperfect life too. As dark forces encircling Emily tighten their grip, and with everything to lose, she must make a life and death decision that she may live to regret. THE CARETAKERS: Emily Parsons is a product of a difficult childhood: self-reliant, fiercely protective and willing to do whatever it takes to safeguard the wellbeing of those in her care. She has even slayed a monster, or two … or three in the name of poetic justice, and yet she is haunted by the image of a beautiful blond girl. Sixteen-year-old Louise Travis has been abducted. Louise’ fate rested in Emily’s hands, but she let her slip through her fingers like gold dust, only to be swept away by a malevolent band of brothers. By once again enlisting the help of computer hacker, Robert Blackmoor, Emily must find Louise before she is lost forever in a Dark Web of heinous crimes, cruelty and corruption. The clock is ticking, and Emily’s investigation is drawing the wrong kind of attention, but she will not back down. She is duty bound to protect those she loves. With skeletons from her past being unearthed, who can she turn to, and who can she trust with her own sinister secrets?
Excerpt: Duty of Care Chapter 8 May 1998 MAY CAME WITH A vengeance. Mid-month, there was an outbreak of whooping cough. Like a wrathful ogre wielding a scythe, it struck down the young, the frail and faint-hearted. Aged five, Rita Derbyshire was incapable of escaping its relentless assault. Emily was quick to read the signs: a lack of appetite, flushed cheeks and a wracking cough that had her gasping for breath. Despite the outbreak, an ineffectual night shift worker was reluctant to respond. He locked the office when Emily asked to use the phone to call for an ambulance and staggered to bed stinking of whisky and tobacco, claiming it was too late to drive anyone to the hospital. Fearing Rita might die, Emily raised hell, had the O’Farrell twins rouse anyone who was not struck down with the illness to dress warmly, to put on gloves and meet her in the kitchen. When they were assembled, bleary eyed and shivering, she explained that if they did not work as a team that night, then some of them would die. Remembering what she had read on the computer at school about the illness, she paired them up and handed one of them a bowl of steaming water. Their partner was to guide them slowly to one of the ailing girls. They were to hold the whooping girl over the bowl under a towel and encourage her to inhale the steam. Once the water had stopped steaming, then they had to do it all again. Having organised them, she returned to Rita and did the same for her. The caravan of bowl carriers continued through the night. When the day shift worker, Cassie Hendricks, arrived at eight in the morning, she was horrified to see the kitchen in disarray and bowls of every shape and size scattered on corridors amid puddles of freezing water. She assumed they had been having a pyjama party or a midnight feast of some sort. It was not until Emily appeared wearing yesterday’s clothes carrying a pale faced little girl across her arms fighting for breath that she realised what had gone on. Close to exhaustion, Emily cried out, “Cassie, Rita needs to go to hospital, right now!” Around her stood a group of ashen faced girls, some still clutching bowls. “You need to call a doctor because there are lots of sick kids here.” Without saying a word, Cassie pulled her phone out of the back pocket of her jeans and made a couple of calls
Will the female sheriff ""get even"" with him? Or will his life end at the hands of the jail's drug lords or a lunatic former cop?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Something’s wrong, my intuition told me, as I stepped out of the stairwell and into the chaotic frenzy of the main hallway running under Division One of the Cook County jail.

Sergeant Ricky Walsh opened the heavy, rusted steel door leading to the death trap—that is A-B stairwell—then turned to me. “Romano, take the stairs down four flights to the bottom, I will meet you there.”

There are four sets of stairs that lead to the main boulevard on the first floor. They are legendary for the infamous men who have been butchered there, the bloodstained walls are a testament to the violence that is the norm in this building. As I begin my descent down the narrow and poorly lit stairwell, the thought hits me: At least half a dozen men have been stabbed in this exact place. The words taunt me as I step slowly down the stairs so that Walsh will have time to beat me to the first floor in the old, decrepit elevator.

When I finally make it down, I breathe a sigh of relief. But it is not Walsh waiting at the huge, steel door I am to exit. Instead of the old mick—who looked and walked like a bulldog with his perfectly groomed hair and mustache—it was one of the lackey guards. They would often hang out on the main floor waiting to proposition some poor woman coming to visit her man. I open the door and step through quickly, not wanting to arouse suspicion. But my heart hangs in my throat.

During my trip down the stairwell, the heavy steel recorder slid down my pant leg, stopping on top of my right foot. The ACE bandage, meant to hold it in place, was also dangling and ready to pop out for everyone to see. Panic set in as my mind processed a million thoughts, but I couldn’t break my stride.

It was common knowledge that this is where inmates often came out stabbing when sent to attack a guard by one of the gang bosses. Looking past the guard, I saw Sergeant Walsh bearing down on us as fast as his stubby legs would carry him.

“Hey Walsh,” I said, “the food poisoning is getting worse, I’m gonna puke all over this guy.”ng around to see what was going on. These guards tolerated zero bull, especially from a smart-ass like me.

I decided that it was quicker and easier to shove the recorder under the waistband of my jail pants and pray it would stay. After splashing water on my face, I poked my head out.

Walsh fell right in line with my cover. “We’re going to the hospital, come with me!” he bellowed.

I exited the closet, pushing the recorder into my torso as we walked past another guard. We traveled down the long hallway. Once we were far enough out of earshot, Walsh found an unoccupied attorney visiting room. As he opened the door, I scurried to the far corner.

“The hallway is clear!” Walsh yelled.

I pulled the recorder from my waistband and looked at it with disdain. Then I wrapped it tight with the ACE bandage. Although the long recording wires had to be reconnected and it only took a few moments, it felt like forever.

Then it hit me: I’m wearing a wire against one of the most violent hitmen Chicago has ever known, and this prick had been a Chicago cop. He probably knows every person who works in this jail. Getting whacked in a place like this costs less than a carton of cigarettes. What the hell have I gotten myself into? But there was no backing out, and I still had to get back to my tier.

Walsh looked at me, his brow furrowed. He quietly asked, “You alright, kid?”

“I better be. I signed a deal with the devil, and it’s time to pay up.”

I drew in a deep breath as we headed to the hospital, so we could sign in and make it look legit.

How did my life get to this point? I wondered as I followed Walsh. Growing up in Chicago, I was exposed to police corruption, murder, drugs, gangsters, and sex, oh yes, lots and lots of sex.

I had no clue of what awaited me, but my unsavory legacy was about to go down in history like crap down a toilet.

My Thoughts:  It was a bit hard for me to "get into" at first. It just wasn't one of those stories that grabbed me from the first few words I kind of had to get a feel for what was happening.  I did enjoy the fact that it was loosly based on a true story because I love true crime stories which is one of the main reasons I wanted to give this a try but I still feel like I am riding the fence because I can't decide exactly how I truly do feel about the main character. On the one hand I feel like he got/was getting what he deserved but their were times during the story that I felt for him. Either way it was a great reading experience and I feel like most who love crime stories would enjoy it.

I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
