Excerpt:

A wild plan began to form in Casey’s mind as she stared at Michael’s clothes. She drew her rifle and then urged her mount closer to the water’s edge, keeping far enough back to be out of Michael’s reach in case he tried to come after her.

“Hey, Donovan!” she cried out.

Michael was startled when he turned to find himself staring up at Casey Turner.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded, moving into deeper water to keep himself shielded from her view.

“I’m checking for strays—but I found you.” She was enjoying his discomfort.

“Just keep on riding,” he ordered, wanting her gone, the sooner the better. He knew she was trouble.

“I don’t have to do anything you tell me to do.”

His scowl deepened. He wasn’t sure what she was up to, but he didn’t trust her.

A sense of power filled Casey. She had him right where she wanted him. “So, how’s the water?”

“Fine.”

“Good. I’ll be going now.”

“Good. Good-bye.”

She urged her mount across the low-running river.

“Why are you heading for Donovan land?” he called. “There aren’t any strays around here.”

Casey didn’t answer. She just rode to the tree where his clothes were hanging and yanked them down, then held them up for him to see. “I didn’t find any strays, but I found these. I think I’ll take them with me!”

“You can’t take my clothes!”

“Oh, yes, I can. You said I needed new clothes when we were in town, so I’ll just take yours!”

“You do and you’ll regret it.” He started to charge through the water toward her.

Casey lifted her rifle for him to see. “Stay right there, Donovan. Enjoy your swim.”

Casey was still laughing as she rode to where his horse was tied up. She freed his mount, then slapped it on the rump to chase it off. She crossed back to the Turner side and galloped away. She did not look back.

Michael climbed out of the water and swore loudly in humiliation and frustration. He wanted to chase her down and teach her a lesson, but it wasn’t going to happen right now. Silently, he vowed that one day she would pay for what she’d done.

But first, he had to figure out how he was going to get home. He spotted his boots nearby and was grateful for that much. What he was going to do next, he wasn’t sure. He only hoped his horse would return to him on his own. If not…

Mitch felt little remorse for ending his relationship with Lucinda as he left her home. He had told her when they’d first started seeing each other that he wanted no commitment. Long ago he’d decided he would not marry, and that wasn’t going to change. He made his way to where his driver was waiting for him.

“Let’s go home, Nelson,” he ordered as he opened the carriage door.

The driver nodded in agreement as Mitch climbed inside.

Bill had been hiding in the coach, and he was more than ready to attack when his intended victim entered the conveyance. Springing forward, he took Mitch completely by surprise as he swung his blackjack with unerring accuracy. As Mitch collapsed heavily across the seat, unconscious, Joe, anxious to help, jumped down from this position atop the vehicle and looked inside.

“How’d you do?”

“No problem. He’s out.”

“You didn’t hit him too hard, did you?”

“He’s still breathing.”

“Good. I didn’t want you to hit him like you did the driver. He ain’t worth nothing to Jack dead.”

“Don’t worry so much. This worked out better. Since he and the driver are about the same size, all we gotta do is switch their clothes. You got a rope?”

“Yeah, let’s tie Williams up just in case he comes to. We don’t want him giving us any trouble.”

“He ain’t going to give us any trouble. Why don’t you get us out of here. We can take care of the rest of this down on the waterfront.”

Joe climbed onto the driver’s seat and drove the carriage away at a deceptively casual pace.

The captain and crew of the La Mouette were growing suspicious as they noted the other ship angling toward them.

“I don’t like this,” Captain Duval growled as he lifted his telescope to scan the other vessel once more. The safety of his ship, crew and passengers was paramount. He couldn’t put them at risk. The odds were with him that this was just another merchant ship, but there was always the chance that it wasn’t, and he wanted to be prepared. “Steer hard aport. Let’s see what happens…”

The crew watched and waited, and when the other ship altered its course to intercept theirs, they knew they were in trouble.

“Full sail! It’s the Scimitar! We’re going to have to make a run for it!”

The crew was jarred into action. The pirate ship’s reputation was well known.

On board the Scimitar, Serad stood with Tariq, his second-in-command, watching the other ship make an effort to escape him.

“They must be carrying something of great value,” Tariq observed.

“The captain is a fool. I wanted our fearsome reputation to make them surrender without a fight, not run and force a battle. Fire now, single shot across the port bow. Maybe a warning shot will stop them,” Serad ordered.

Ignored in the midst of the chaos, Victoria and Miss Jones stood on deck, watching all that was happening. Only when the other ship fired its gun did they realize they were in danger.

“They must be pirates!” Victoria exclaimed.

“We have to go below now!” her elderly companion insisted.

Captain Duval looked up just then to see them on deck. “Ladies! Get to your cabins and don’t come out until I come for you!”
